PERCIVAL PEMBROKE depicts Pembroke C Mk1 WV740, in the 1980s Cold War years, during the period it was in service with No.60 Squadron, RAF Wildenrath, Germany.

The PEMBROKE C1 entered service with the RAF in 1953 to replace the Avro Anson in the light transport role and soon became a popular aircraft with aircrew and groundcrews and with passengers. As with other RAF transports, the passenger seats were rearward-facing for improved safety and the Pembroke could fly up to 8 passengers over long distances in relative comfort when compared with similar types.

Six were modified as photographic reconnaissance (PR) aircraft and saw operational service with No.81 Squadron during the Malayan Emergency and later with No.60 Squadron. Until these were withdrawn from use in 1988 they were important Cold War intelligence gatherers, their role highly classified until the late 1990s. PR Pembrokes flew regular missions along the air corridors between West Germany and Berlin, their true function known only to a few within military and intelligence circles. These aircraft were engaged in Operation Hallmark, a secret intelligence operation in which the Pembrokes were fitted with high-powered reconnaissance cameras to acquire imagery of Soviet and East German military installations and airfields below the tightly controlled air corridors. The story of the Pembroke spyplanes is recorded in The Hunting Pembrokes>

After retiring from RAF service in 1988, several Pembrokes were sold to private owners and continue flying more than 40 years later in 2019, WV740 among them.  This fine tribute to the popular Pembroke is available now to pre-order for delivery in January 2019.
