Quick Overview
Canberra PR9 Spyplane
Details
A high-flying RAF Canberra PR9 Spyplane on the road to Kabul during intelligence operations over Afghanistan. Operating at the absolute limit of their range and performance, PR9s flew daily reconnaissance missions over Afghanistan. The first mission to Kabul was flown by XH135, portrayed here with sat-nav, data-link and ECM systems and with a complete set of Goodrich ultra-high resolution cameras and electro-optical sensors.
The PR9 was the ultimate high-performance big-wing, big-engine RAF Canberra variant. Powered by two Rolls Royce Avon 206 turbojets, it had exceptional performance at extreme altitude and sparkling handling at low level. Michael Rondot flew the PR9 in both the low-level tactical role and the ultra-high level strategic reconnaissance role during four years with Number 39 Squadron at RAF Wyton. His intimate knowledge of the aircraft and its performance are evident in this fine study of a PR9 at 50,000 ft+. Underrated for many years as a strategic recce asset, the PR9 proved itself at the end of its career in the skies over Afghanistan where its suite of high resolution cameras, electro-optical sensors and data link were unrivalled.
