Details

Classic portrayal of a Jaguar 4-ship formation flying at low level under a blanket of bad weather.

"When this painting of 4 Jaguars flying low and fast in "Moon Country' low flying area 14 was finished and I was looking for a suitable title, I showed it to Stu Weatherstone, who was in the STANEVAL office at RAF Coltishall. He took one look at it and said "That's Jaguar Weather", meaning the blanket of low cloud covering the hilltops and a 4-ship of Jaguars threading their way through the letterbox gaps on the ridge lines. He was right.

It was what we did; we were good at it. The Jaguar made it easy for the pilot because you always knew where you were, and a quick glance inside the cockpit at the projected map display told you where the valleys and escape routes were. The other element leader in the formation did not have to keep looking for the leader because they were both flying demanded groundspeed, continuously calculated by the inertial navigation system. If you lost sight of the leader in a rain shower, you just carried on at the correct speed and punched through the weather until the black smoke reappeared in front. It wasn't strictly legal, but on a flat earth it was the only way to go.
The wingmen in Jaguar weather? Their job was to get on their leader's wing and stick without being told. If the weather ahead was deteriorating and a wingman had not come in from wide card formation to appear in his leader's mirror he was in for a rugged debrief".
